The Changing Face of Home Prices in New Rochelle

New Rochelle is a city in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 106,924 at the 2010 census. It is named after the Dutch town of Roermond. New Rochelle is in the North Hudson Valley region of New York and is adjacent to Mount Vernon and Yonkers.

The area that now comprises New Rochelle was first settled by the Dutch in 1664 as part of a tract granted by the English Crown to Colonel Richard Nicolls for his military service during the Third Anglo-Dutch War. The town grew rapidly as a result of its strategic location on a major transportation route between Manhattan and Albany. It became an important commercial center, with many prosperous merchants and manufacturers establishing homes here. In 1853, New Rochelle became home to East Side Academy, one of America's first private schools for girls (now known as Mount Holyoke College).

During World War II, much of New Rochelle was destroyed by bombing raids carried out by the United States Army Air Forces Eighth Air Force against targets in Germany and Italy. Reconstruction began almost immediately after the war ended; one significant aspect was the development of suburban housing tracts such as Saddle River and Greenburgh Park north of town which helped to offset some of the population loss caused by migration to larger cities such as New York City during that time period. In recent years, gentrification has increased downtown's nightlife while also raising prices for housing; nevertheless, many longtime residents remain in or near downtown neighborhoods such as Union Square and Lower Manhattanville/Morningside Heights/Arlington Heights/East Hills/West Hills/ Pelham Bay Park Southside/Downtown Northside etc., especially since many new jobs have been created in technology companies located there or nearby within commuting distance (eBay being one notable example).

Today, tourism remains an important industry in New Rochelle with visitors coming for shopping at its numerous boutiques and stores along Main Street or dining at its restaurants; moreover, several film productions have been filmed there including "The Devil Wears Prada", "The Social Network", "Moneyball" and "Get Out". Additionally, several colleges are located within city limits including Fordham University (a Jesuit university), Stony Brook University (a SUNY school), Ramapo College (formerly known as Ramapo College- New Rochelle) (a community college), Touro College (a Jewish college) and Yeshiva University's Cardozo School of Law among others.
