The Oneida area was first settled around 1796 by John and Ebenezer Smith. The town of Oneida was incorporated in 1853 from parts of the towns of Rome and Ovid.

Oneida is located in the northeast corner of Madison County at 42°5′N 78°50′W / 42.083°N 78.883°W / 42.083; -78.883 (42.08322,-78.98331). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land。

The east-west streets are named after Ulysses S Grant, Rutherford B Hayes, James K Polk and Zachary Taylor while north-south streets are named after George Washington, Andrew Jackson and Winfield Scott respectively 。There are also some unnamed streets that run through out town 。 Utica is about to the west while Rome is about to east 。 Ovid is located just south of Oneida

As for climate Oneida has four distinct seasons with hot summers and cold winters . Winters can be very harsh with below freezing temperatures on occasion . Springtime brings beautiful weather with occasional showers but most importantly flowers starting to bloom . Fall sees leaves changing colors as well as cooler temperatures which makes for a great time to cozy up inside with a good book or movie . Summers can be quite hot but thankfully there's usually plenty of breeze blowing through town which keeps things comfortable .
