Shelter Island Heights is a popular summer destination for residents of Long Island and New York City. The land that Shelter Island Heights occupies was once part of the larger island known as Hog Islet. In 1640, English settlers from Southampton purchased Hog Islet from the native Wampanoags for 50 pounds of tobacco. The first European settler in what would become Shelter Island Heights was Captain John Smith who arrived in 1614 aboard the Mayflower. He named the island "Island of Sheep" because he saw many sheep on its shores. In 1683, Governor Thomas Dongan granted permission to build a mill on Hog Islet which led to its current name - Shelter Island Heights.
In 1810, an inn called "The White Horse" opened on Shelter Island Heights providing lodging for travelers arriving by boat from Manhattan or Brooklyn. The inn became known as "The Blue Horse" after it burned down in 1892 and was rebuilt using blue stone quarried on the island. Today, there is still a blue horse sculpture near the entrance to town commemorating this event.
Shelter Island Heights began to develop rapidly after World War II when wealthy New Yorkers began purchasing summer homes here due to its proximity to Manhattan and its excellent beaches and recreation opportunities such as sailing, swimming, fishing and golfing. Many celebrities have also owned homes in or visited Shelter Island Heights including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (who bought an estate called Fox Hill), Brooke Astor (who built an estate called Tanglewood), Barbara Walters (whose home overlooks Oyster Bay) and Jerry Seinfeld (whose home overlooks Montauk).
Today, much of the commercial district along Main Street has been replaced by upscale waterfront homes with private docks that offer direct access to Long Beach Sound or protected bayside areas perfect for kayaking or sailing boats.. Today's real estate market in Shelter Island Heights is very competitive with prices reaching into six-figure territory for some properties.. There are several factors contributing to this high demand including: close proximity to Manhattan (just 25 minutes away by car), excellent beaches & recreational opportunities such as sailing & swimming , easy access via ferryboat or bridge into Nassau County where there are many more shopping options , low crime rates , moderate climate year-round with milder temperatures during winter months than most locations on Long Island ,and strong community spirit .
Despite these positive factors however there have been some challenges faced by homeowners over recent years including: increased traffic congestion due to increasing popularity of neighboring towns such as East Hampton & Southampton ; increased development pressures resulting from new construction regulations ; limited availability of open space due to rapid growth ; rising property taxes ; lack of affordable housing options ;and difficulty getting approval for major renovations .
