Hillsborough, NC

Hillsborough is a town located in the eastern part of North Carolina. The population of Hillsborough was 23,898 as of the 2010 census. The town is bordered by the towns of Fuquay-Varina and Morrisville to the north, east, and south, respectively.

The land that now comprises Hillsborough was first settled in 1792 by James and John Hill. In 1810, James Hill sold a tract of land to Jesse Bynum for use as a plantation. Bynum built a mill on the Yadkin River near what is now downtown Hillsborough. In 1816, Jesse Bynum sold his plantation to Samuel Cox Jr., who renamed it " Hillsborough." Cox developed the town into an agricultural center and built several mills along the Yadkin River. The town's first church was erected in 1824.

In 1850, Hillsborough became part of newly formed Randolph County. The railroad arrived in Hillsborough in 1854, which led to increased development and growth within the town. By 1860, there were approximately 1,000 residents living in Hillsborough. During Reconstruction following the American Civil War (1861-1865), many African Americans migrated to northern Randolph County seeking freedom from slavery and opportunities for economic advancement. As a result of this influx of new residents, many businesses were founded by African Americans during this time period; these businesses included grocery stores, blacksmithshops, tailorshops etc..

In 1870, there were 3 schools operating within Hillsborough: one white school operated out of an old Methodist church building; one black school operated out of what is now known as Old Main Baptist Church; and one white school operated out of Cox's Mill Schoolhouse which served all students within Randolph County including those from Hillsborough Township which at that time extended into parts of present day Fuquay-Varina Township

In 1890 there were 9 churches operating within Hillsborough: 5 white churches (including 2 Presbyterian churches) 1 black church (Old Main Baptist) 1 Catholic church 1 Jewish synagogue 1 Free Will Baptist church 1 Masonic lodge In 1900 there were 16 businesses operating within Hillsboro including 4 banks (1 National Bank), 8 grocery stores (4 general stores), 2 drugstores/pharmacies), 2 barbershops/beauty shops ,1 lumberyard/building supply store ,1 tannery/leather goods store ,1 carriage factory/repair shop ,1 cotton gin/gin mill ,and 1 printing press . There were also 3 schools operating within Hillsboro: Cox's Mill Schoolhouse serving all students within Randolph County including those from hillsboroug h township which at that time extended into parts o f present day fuquay - varina township ; East Rutherford School serving students residing east o f rutherford county ; & West Rutherford School serving students residing west o f rutherford county .

During World War II (1941-1945), many men enlisted or entered military service leaving women behind to manage households and run businesses while their husbands were away fighting overseas . This period saw an increase in female entrepreneurship with women owning or managing many businesses such as beauty salons hair dressers etc... Additionally during this time period some men returned home after serving their country resulting in an increase i n male entrepreneurship with men owning or managing many businesses such as car dealerships gas stations etc...

Today there are over 100 businesses operatingwithinhillsboroug hincludingmany small business owners who have been able to successfully operate their business for over 10 years . Many small business owners are able t o provide jobs not only to themselves but also t o their family members thereby creating a senseof communitywithinhillsboroug hwhich has been beneficial t o boththetownspeopleandtheregionasawhole . Additionally due t o its location near major metropolitan areas such as Raleigh Durham & Charlotte NC; hillsboro has seen significant growth over recent years leadingtoanincreaseinresidentialpopulationfrom23 898in2010to27 068in2015accordingtotheUS Census Bureau
