Madison, OH

Madison is a city located in the U.S. state of Ohio, and is the county seat of Madison County. The population was 24,521 at the 2010 census. Madison is part of the Columbus, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Madison was founded in 1812 by General James Winchester and named for James Madison, fourth President of the United States. The city grew rapidly as a center for trade and commerce due to its location on the National Road (now US Route 33). In 1816, Madison became capital of Ohio when the state government moved from Chillicothe. The city's growth continued through the early 20th century as it became an industrial center with companies such as Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and American Locomotive Company headquartered there. However, during the Great Depression many businesses closed their doors and by 1940 Madison had only 10% of its population that it had in 1910.

Since then, however, Madison has experienced a resurgence as a center for education and business activity. Today, there are many businesses based in Madison that provide jobs for residents including Nationwide Insurance Company, Fifth Third Bank, Cardinal Health Corporation (formerly Wabash Valley Hospital), Kimberly-Clark Corporation (makers of Huggies diapers), Abbott Laboratories (makers of Abbreviated New Drug Application products), 3M Company (makers of Post-it Notes) and many others. Additionally, there are numerous educational institutions located in or near Madison including Capital University Law School; Columbus State Community College; Franklin University; Saint Francis Xavier University; Eastern Michigan University; The Ohio State University; Miami University – Oxford; Northern Kentucky University – Highland Heights Campus; Wright State University – Dayton Campus among others
