Spencerville, OH

Spencerville is a small town located in Franklin County, Ohio. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus Metropolitan Area.

The history of Spencerville can be traced back to 1810 when John and Sarah Hays settled on what is now known as the Hays Farmstead. In 1837, James and Nancy (Smith) Spencerville purchased the farm from John and Sarah Hays. James and Nancy were the parents of four children: William, Elizabeth, George, and Caroline. Caroline married Charles Ewing in 1851 and they moved to a farm north of town which became known as the Ewing Farmstead.

In 1892, Charles Ewing sold his farm to Jeptha Wetherill who subdivided it into lots for sale in 1893. The first house built in Spencerville was by Levi Smith on Lot 1 on April 10th 1893. The first post office was established on October 3rd 1893 with Jeptha Wetherill as Postmaster.

In 1902, Atherton & Co., a real estate firm from Cincinnati opened an office in Spencerville with Harry Atherton as president and manager. In 1907-1908 Atherton & Co., under new ownership by Harry Atherton's son-in-law Clarence Darrow (of Darrow & Darrow), undertook one of Ohio's most ambitious real estate projects - construction of a large country club just outside town on land leased from Jeptha Wetherill for $5 per year plus $1 per member per year for dues - an unheard-of sum at that time! Completed in 1909 at a cost of over $200,000 (approximately $4 million today), this country club remains one of Franklin County's most prestigious private clubs - still operated by descendants of its original members!

During World War I (1914-1918), many men left home to fight overseas while women took over many household duties; this created opportunities for women in real estate as well as other fields such as business administration. In 1920 there were only six female licensed real estate agents serving Franklin County; within ten years there were over fifty!

The 1920s also saw significant growth for Spencerville with new businesses opening including two banks (the First National Bank and Farmers State Bank) two grocery stores (the Grocery Store owned by Mr & Mrs C R Whitehead and the store next door owned by Mr G L Myers), two gas stations (the Texaco station owned by C R Whitehead and P M Myers' station), two garages/service stations (the garage/service station owned by G L Myers and P M Myers'), two barbershops (Mr F S Moore's shop at 209 East Main Streetand Mr B K Brown's shop at 211 East Main Street). There were also several restaurants including Mrs T L Hicks' restaurant at 213 East Main Streetand Mrs N K Owens' restaurant at 215 East Main Streetwhich both served lunch until about 1960 when they closed due to competition from fast food restaurants such as McDonalds which had begun opening up around town .

Spencerville continued to grow during the 1930s with construction beginning on several new businesses including Drury Chevrolet dealership which opened in 1933; Miller Brothers department store which opened in 1935; Keystone Auto Supply which opened in 1936; LaFontaine Tire Company which opened in 1937; Ace Hardware store which opened 1938; United Dairymen Incorporated dairy plant which began production 1941); three churches: First Baptist Church founded c1890 , Christ Presbyterian Church founded c1898 , St Paul Lutheran Church founded 1912 ); four schools: Spencerville School District #1 established 1895 , Eastern High School established 1928 ; five banks: First National Bank founded 1890 , Farmers State Bank founded 1896 , Citizens Savings Bank founded 1914 ; three newspapers: The Courier published 1898-1900 , The Sentinel published 1924-1926 , The News published 1946 ).

Today, much has remained unchanged since its establishment over 150 years ago with downtown featuring several historic buildings including the original Jeptha Wetherill home now used as city hall; Levi Smith's original house now used for apartments ; James Ewing's original house now used for apartments ; Charles Ewing's former home now used for offices ; Harry Atherton's former home now used for apartments . There are also several newer businesses such as Walgreens pharmacy chain store(opened 1992 ), Subway sandwich chain store(opened 1994 ), Home Depot hardware store(opened 1998 ), Lowe’s hardware store(opened 2000 ), Comfort Suites hotel chain(opened 2002 ). Additionally there are numerous residential homes ranging from traditional style homes built during the early 1900s through more contemporary styles popular today .
