Lansdale is a borough in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 10,824 at the 2010 census. Lansdale is located at 40°2′N 75°53′W (40.044,-75.933). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.5 square miles (6.1 km²), all of it land.

The first Europeans to visit what would become Lansdale were the Dutch in 1682 and they named it " Lansdalesche", after a village near Amsterdam where some of their members lived. The first permanent settler in what would become Lansdale was Nicholas Longworth who arrived from England in 1711 and built a mill on Conestoga Creek near where the borough's Main Street now intersects with Church Road. In 1727, William Penn granted Longworth 640 acres (259 ha) for his services as an agent during negotiations for Penn's purchase of lands from the Lenni Lenape Indians. This tract became known as "Longworth's Purchase".

In 1798, Lansdale became part of Montgomery County when that county was formed from parts of Chester and Philadelphia counties. The town grew rapidly as a result of its location on major transportation routes - Lancaster Turnpike (now PA Route 30) and Conestoga Road (now PA Route 173). A number of turnpikes were constructed through or near Lansdale during this period including: Lancaster Turnpike (1802), Northampton Pike (1806), York Road Pike (1810), Easton Road Pike (1812), West Chester Pike(1816), Market Street Pike(1820), and Phoenixville Pike(1825). These roads made it easy for farmers and merchants to get goods to marketplaces throughout central Pennsylvania; thus contributing to the town's early growth and prosperity

As transportation improved, so did housing opportunities in Lansdale; by 1850 there were already several dozen houses built on Main Street alone - most designed by noted local architect John Haviland . By 1900 there were nearly 1,000 houses in town - many designed by prominent architects including George Fenton , Frank Furness , Waddy Bicknell , William Strickland , Charles Klauder , Edward Lippincott Tilton , James Gamble Rogers Jr., Horace Trumbauer Jr., Louis Haysbert Jr., Samuel Sloan II , Walter Cope II , Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., Jens Jensen Larsen & Poulsen Ltd., Alfred Cudahy & Sons Ltd., Warren & Wetmore Incorporated etc Today there are over 3,000 homes in Lansdale - making it one of Montgomery County's most populous townships .

As with any community however, changes have occurred over time – some good, some bad – but overall Lansdale has continued to grow and prosper into the 21st century . While no single event can be credited with this sustained success story – rather it is the result of many factors including: strong economic development ; excellent public schools ; supportive government ; an active community spirit ; well-planned infrastructure ; proactive marketing efforts etc – nevertheless each one has played an important role in sustaining township life over time .
