Cedar Hill is a city located in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. Cedar Hill is part of the DallasFort Worth metroplex.

The city was founded in 1881 and named for the cedar trees that grew along its banks of the Cedar Creek. The first post office opened in 1882. A railroad depot was built in 1886 and a town hall followed two years later. In 1888, Cedar Hill became an incorporated municipality with a population of 1,500 people.

In 1902, oil was discovered near Cedar Hill and by 1911 it had become one of the most important oil towns in Texas. The oil boom ended abruptly with World War I and by 1920 Cedar Hill's population had decreased to 1,000 people as many residents moved away to find work during the economic downturn. However, by 1930 Cedar Hill's population had increased to 3,000 as new businesses were established to take advantage of the oil boom's residual wealth.

During World War II, military bases were established throughout Texas and many civilians were hired to work on them; this led to another period of rapid growth for Cedar Hill as thousands of new residents arrived to take advantage of jobs available in the defense industry. By 1960, Cedar Hill's population had reached 10,000 people and it continued growing rapidly throughout the 1970s and 1980s as more suburbanites moved into the city due to its proximity to downtown Dallas and its abundance of job opportunities.

Today, Cedar Hill is a thriving city with a diverse economy that includes both traditional industries such as manufacturing and defense contracting as well as newer sectors such as information technology services and healthcare services. The city has undergone significant redevelopment over the past several years including construction of new retail stores and restaurants along with renovation projects for older buildings that have been damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Harvey in 2017
