The Coahoma County seat is Livingston. The county was created on December 15, 1836 and named for Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States. The population was 10,859 at the 2000 census.

Coahoma County is located in southeastern Texas and is bordered by Nacogdoches County to the north, Panola County to the east, Franklin County to the south, and Shelby County to the west. The county has a total area of 1,912 square miles (5,811 km2), of which 1,880 square miles (5,717 km2) is land and 54 square miles (137 km2) (3.4%) is water.

The climate in Coahoma County is generally hot and humid with occasional thunderstorms during summer months. Winters are mild with occasional cold fronts that can bring snowfall in higher elevations. There are two major rivers within Coahoma County - the Neches River which flows through Livingston and into Tyler Bayou; and Buffalo Bayou which flows through Houston before emptying into Galveston Bay near Houston City Hall.
