Happy's history can be traced back to 1837 when a group of settlers from Tennessee established a trading post on the banks of the Colorado River. The community was originally called " New Braunfels" after Prince Maximilian of Wied, who was then serving as regent for his brother King Ludwig I of Bavaria. In 1841, New Braunfels became the county seat of Comal County and it remained so until 1870 when it was moved to Round Rock due to its increasing size. In honor of its former status as county seat, Happy retains an Old Courthouse Square which features a replica courthouse from 1870 and several historical markers commemorating important events in Happy's past.
In 1881, Happy became an incorporated city and in 1909 it annexed neighboring communities including Canyon Lake and Spring Branch. These annexations increased Happy's population from 1,500 to 4,000 residents by 1914. However, during World War II many residents left for military service or moved away because of the war effort; by 1950 only 2,000 people remained in Happy.
Since 1950 Happy has experienced steady growth as new businesses and homes have been built; today the population is over 2,800 people and continues to grow due to annexation by neighboring communities such as Westlake Village (1998) and Cedar Park (2003).
Real estate in Happy is primarily made up of single family homes with some duplexes and apartments also present; most homes are owner-occupied but there are also some rental properties available.
