Tolar, TX

Tolar is a small town in the Hill Country of Texas. The population was just over 1,000 in 2010. Tolar is located about 45 minutes north of Austin and about an hour south of San Antonio.

The town was founded in 1881 by Colonel William H. Emory and his wife, Alice (née Garland). The town was named for Tolar Creek, which runs through it. Colonel Emory had been stationed at the Presidio of San Antonio de Bexar when he met Alice Garland while she was on a visit to the fort. They married and moved to Texas, where they started a farm near present-day Round Rock. In 1884, they built their first home on what is now Main Street in Tolar.

In 1886, Colonel Emory bought 640 acres of land east of the creek that would become the town's main commercial district. He built a store and several homes on this property, which became known as " Emoryville". In 1889, he founded the Tolar State Bank and served as its first president. The bank still operates today as part of First National Bank - Round Rock/ Tolar branch.

In 1907, Alice Emory donated 640 acres west of Main Street to the town for use as a public park; this land became known as " Alice Park". In 1928, Alice Park was renamed "Veterans Memorial Park" in honor of all who have served our country. Today it is one of Tolar's most popular attractions with picnic areas, playgrounds, tennis courts and a swimming pool open year-round..
