Banning is a city located in Riverside County, California. The population was 103,912 at the 2010 census. Banning is the principal city of the Banning- Canyon Lake Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had a population of 243,702 at the 2010 census.

Banning has been known as "The Garden City of the Desert" because of its many parks and gardens. It is also home to numerous golf courses and resorts. The city's economy is based on agriculture (especially citrus) and tourism.

Banning was founded in 1905 by J.D. Banning and C.L. Van Dusen as a stop on the Southern Pacific Railroad line between Los Angeles and San Diego; it was named for J.D.'s father-in-law, Senator George Pardee of California (1837–1914). A post office opened that same year with the name "Bannock". In 1907, J D Banning built his first hotel - The Palms - which still stands today as a landmark in downtown Banning; it features an Egyptian revival architecture design by noted local architect Waddy Bynum (1872–1951).

In 1909, J D Banning organized the first bank in town - The Bank of Bannock Valley - now part of Wells Fargo Bank NA In 1911 he built what would become one of Banning's most iconic structures - The Hotel del Coronado which still operates today under new ownership as La Quinta Inn & Suites del Coronado In 1915 he built another landmark hotel - The Hotel Colorado which still operates today under new ownership as Best Western Plus Colorado Springs Inn & Suites In 1916 he organized another bank in town - The Bank of Bannock Valley National Association now part of UBS Financial Services Incorporated . In 1923 he built what would become one of Banning's most iconic structures again - The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway now operated by Palm Springs Aerial Tramway Co., Inc.. This aerial tramway links downtown Palm Springs with several high-end residential areas including Cathedral Hills, Northridge Hills and Shadow Hills above Palm Springs International Airport just east of town; it has been designated an historic monument by the City Of Palm Springs . He also developed several golf courses including Elsinore Country Club (now defunct), Indian Wells Golf Course (now defunct), Rancho Mirage Golf Course (now defunct), La Quinta Country Club (still open) and Desert Mountain Golf Club(still open). He also developed several resort hotels including Hotel del Coronado Resort & Spa(still open), Ramada Plaza Resort(still open), Marriott Desert Ridge Resort(closed but reopened later as Residence Inn by Marriott Desert Ridge ), Best Western Plus Canyon Lake Inn&Suites(closed but reopened later as Best Western Plus Canyon Lake ), Holiday Inn Express & Suites By Carlson Canyon Lake(closed but reopened later as Holiday Inn Express & Suites By Carlson ). Today there are over 50 businesses in downtown BanNING bearing his name or some variation thereof!

In 1933, following a devastating flood that swept through much of Southern California, Governor Cesar Estrada declared a state holiday in honorof J D BanNING who had donated $100,000 to help fund relief efforts .

In 1941 , following World War II , J D BanNING organized one more bank in town - now part of BBVA Compass Bank NA . He also started developing housing tracts outside town to accommodate returning servicemen and their families ; these developments became known collectively as "The GI Tracts". These developments include: Valencia Park , Green Acres , Sun City Center , Sunland Village , Heritage Hills , Heritage Lakeshore Estates among others . Today there are over 20 businesses bearing his name or some variation thereof!

J DBanNING died suddenly on January 3rd 1952 at age 73 after suffering from heart disease for many years; he is buried next to his wife Marguerite at Holy Cross Cemetery in Cathedral City CA . His legacy lives on through all that he created !
