Southbury is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 8,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Haven– Milford metropolitan area.
The town was first settled in 1701 by members of the Quiney family from Groton, Massachusetts. Southbury was incorporated as a town in 1784 and named for Southbury, Berkshire County, England. The land that became Southbury was originally part of the Pequot Indian Nation and was purchased by General Israel Putnam from Chief Noonday in 1637 for 60 pounds sterling.
The first settler in what would become Southbury was Ebenezer Richardson who built a cabin on what is now known as Richardson Hill in 1701. Ebenezer's grandson James Richardson built the first house on Main Street which still stands today and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In 1802 Joseph Hawley built a mill on Mill Brook which powered several sawmills and other businesses until it closed down in 1978. The mill building still stands today and has been converted into apartments.
In 1825 Jonathan Edwards founded Yale College in New Haven which caused an influx of people to move to Southbury to be close to Yale University which at the time was one of America's leading colleges. This led to an increase in population which continued until World War II when many people left for military service or moved away because of the Great Depression.
The population rebounded after World War II due to new housing developments being constructed such as Colonial Village (1948), Spring Valley (1953), Lakeside (1960), Woodlands (1964) and Green Acres (1972). In 1990 Southbury annexed portions of neighboring towns including Easton where Colonial Village had been built and North Branford where Lakeside had been developed; this increased its population by over 5,000 people making it one of Connecticut's fastest growing towns during that time period..
Today there are many new housing developments being constructed such as Cross Creek Village (2010), Stonebridge Commons (2011), Park Ridge Estates (2012) and Willowbrook Estates (2013). These developments are helping to increase the population even more while also preserving much of the historic character of Southbury which makes it a desirable place to live..
