The town's history can be traced back to 1638 when it was first settled by English Puritans led by Rev. John Davenport and Capt. Thomas Stanton as part of the New Haven Colony. The area now known as Woodbridge was then known as "Wadsworth". In 1642, Wadsworth became a separate township from New Haven Colony and took its name from Sir Dudley Carleton, 1st Baronet (1584-1654), who had been Secretary of State to King Charles I and Governor of Jamaica.
In 1701, an act was passed by the General Court of Connecticut dividing the colony into two parts: East Windsor (now Middletown) and West Windsor (now Woodbridge). This division reflected the fact that East Windsor contained more wealthy landowners while West Windsor had more rural land holdings. As a result of this division, Wadsworth Township became part of Woodbridge County which included present-day Middlesex County as well as Hartford County (which now includes Fairfield County).
The early settlers were farmers who raised livestock and crops such as wheat, corn, rye and barley on their farms which they sold in local markets or shipped downriver to New York City where there were large markets for agricultural products. In addition to farming , early settlers also engaged in timbering , milling , tanning , blacksmithing , carpentry , tailoring , shoemaking and other trades .
During the Revolutionary War period (1775-1783), Woodbridge played an important role because it served as a supply base for British troops stationed in Connecticut . Because of its strategic location on major transportation routes between Boston and New York City, British forces raided villages throughout western Connecticut including Wadsworth which they burned down on October 5th 1777 .
In 1803, following the War of 1812 between America and Great Britain , President James Madison signed legislation creating Orange County out of portions of Hartford County including present-day Woodbridge Township . This legislation reflected Madison's belief that Orange County would be more politically stable than Hartford County because it had a smaller population base composed mainly of wealthy landowners who were opposed to American independence .
As a result of this legislation , present-day Wadsworth Township became partof Orange County which included present day Middletown Borough (which later separated from Middletown Township to form its own municipality), portionsof Manchester Townshipand partsof Wallingford Borough(which later separated from Wallingford Townshipto form its own municipality).
During the mid 1800s railroads began expanding into eastern Connecticut bringing with them new businesses such as textile mills which employed large numbers of workers who commuted into town daily from rural areas outside Woodbridge Townships boundaries . In addition to textile mills there were also shoe factories ; meatpacking plants ; breweries ; printing shops ; insurance companies ; banks ; hotels ; restaurants etc.. Many businesses located in downtown Woodbridge are still operating today including; Bank Of America; Dunkin' Donuts; Staples; JCPenney; Sears Roebuck & Co.; Ford Motor Company Plant #2; GE Appliances Plant #1; Verizon Wireless Store #1 etc..
