Sumner is a city in Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 11,872 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the eastern edge of Metro Detroit and is bordered by Rochester Hills to the north, Auburn Hills to the east, Pontiac to the south, and Clawson to the west.

The city's name derives from its founder, Sumner Redfield Alger (1836-1910), who purchased land in what was then called Alger Township from Henry Clay Frick in 1875. Alger named his new town Sumner after his home town of Sumter, South Carolina. The first businesses opened in Sumner in 1876 and it became an incorporated city on January 1, 1897.
