Hamilton is a city located in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 17,868. Hamilton is home to Washington University in St. Louis and its medical center as well as several other businesses and organizations.

The history of Hamilton can be traced back to 1827 when Colonel James W. Fenton purchased 320 acres of land north of present-day downtown Hamilton for $10,000. The town that developed on this land was originally called Fentonville after Colonel Fenton, but it was later renamed Hamilton after Alexander Hamilton, the first U.S. Secretary of Treasury and one of America's most influential Founding Fathers.

In 1854, the railroad came to Hamilton and began to change the town forever by bringing in new residents and businesses. The railroad also made it possible for people all over the country to visit Hamilton and see what an amazing place it was becoming. In 1886, Washington University opened its doors in downtown Hamilton and began to change the city once again by bringing in new students and faculty members who were looking for a place to live that was close to their work at Washington University Medical Center. Today, Washington University remains a major part of life in Hamilton with more than 20 thousand students attending classes on campus each year.

Hamilton has seen many changes over the years due largely to its location near some of America's most important business and cultural centers: downtown St Louis; Clayton; O'Fallon; Chesterfield; Ballwin; Wildwood; Webster Groves; Creve Coeur; Kirkwood; Maplewood among others make up what is known as "The Metro Area." This metropolitan area has helped drive economic growth not only in Hamilton but throughout much of southern Missouri as well making it one of the region's most prosperous cities today!
