Mount Vernon, MO

Mount Vernon is a city located in Warren County, Missouri, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 2,812. Mount Vernon is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area.

The city was founded in 1836 and named for George Washington's home at Mount Vernon. The town was originally laid out on land donated by General James Winchester and his son-in-law Colonel John C. Fremont. The first buildings were erected in 1837 and Mount Vernon became an official town on January 1, 1840. The first post office opened on February 4, 1840 with James Winchester as postmaster.

The early economy of Mount Vernon depended heavily upon agriculture and milling; however, with the arrival of the railroad in 1855 and subsequent development of industry, Mount Vernon began to diversify its economy into manufacturing (particularly textiles), transportation (including a railroad depot), banking and commerce. Today, tourism is also an important part of the local economy with visitors coming to see sites associated with George Washington such as his home at Mt. Vernon as well as attractions such as Liberty Memorial Park and the Truman Presidential Library & Museum.
