Bogota is a borough in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 9,898,[10][11] reflecting an increase of 524 (+5.4%) from the 9,341 counted in the 2000 Census,[12] which had in turn increased by 1,906 (+14.7%) from the 8,637 counted in the 1990 Census.[13]

According to the United States Census Bureau, Bogota has a total area of 2.0 square miles (5.1 km2), all of it land.[15]

The borough borders East Rutherford and West New York municipalities and is bisected by Route 3/ New Jersey Turnpike.[16][17][18][19][20] The Passaic River forms its eastern boundary with East Rutherford while Ridge Road forms its southern boundary with West New York.[21][22] Ridge Road also separates Bogota from neighboring Clifton.[23] The western border is formed by Springfield Avenue and Interstate 80/ New Jersey Turnpike[24].

The name " Bogota" derives from a Native American word meaning "place where wild grapes grow".[25][26] Bogota was first settled around 1790 as part of Saddle River Township,[27]:3[28]:4[29]:2[30]:1[31]:1 and became an incorporated borough on April 10, 1894,[32]:1 following a referendum held that same year.[33]:3 The borough's original boundaries were based on those of Saddle River Township but were later expanded to include portions of what are now East Rutherford and West New York municipalities as well as parts of Clifton Township.[34]:2 In addition to its namesake grape variety, Bogota is also known for its watermelons which are grown commercially in orchards located throughout town; these melons are featured prominently during summertime festivals such as Grapefest and Watermelon Festival held annually at various locations throughout town including Memorial Park,[35](formerly known as Green Acres)[36](originally farmland purchased by settler John Bartram)[37](now home to municipal buildings including police headquarters), Veterans Memorial Park,[38](formerly known as Greenwood Cemetery)[39], Franklin D Roosevelt Park (located adjacent to Veterans Memorial Park),[40], Saint Mary's Regional School District Administration Building (located adjacent to Franklin D Roosevelt Park) and Saint Josephs Regional School District Administration Building (located adjacent to Saint Mary's Regional School District Administration Building).[41]) There are also numerous privately owned orchards located within Bogota including those owned by members of the Lodi family who have been involved in agriculture since before statehood; these orchards include those located along Springfield Avenue between Routes 3/ New Jersey Turnpike and Route 80/ New Jersey Turnpike as well as along Ridge Road between Routes 3/ New Jersey Turnpike and Route 80/ New Jersey Turnpike east of Springfield Avenue).[42](See map below)

As of the census [43](2010), there were 9800 people residing within Borough limits who identified themselves ethnically Italian American making up 27% percentof all residents living within Borough limits while being second only behind Latinos who make up 31% percentof all residents living within Borough limits; both groups represent larger ethnicities than any other group represented among Borough residents with African Americans comprising 11% percentof all residents living within Borough limits followed by Asians at 6% percentand Whites making up 55%percentof all residents living within Borough limits
