Clifton, NJ

Clifton is a borough in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 21,527,[8][9] reflecting an increase of 1,711 (+24.1%) from the 18,673 counted in the 2000 Census,[10] which had in turn increased by 2,837 (+40.4%) from the 14,063 counted in the 1990 Census.[11]

Clifton was incorporated as a borough on March 3, 1898,[12][13] from portions of Paterson Township and Clifton City.[14][15] The borough derives its name from Clifton Forge near Bristol in England.[16][17]

The history of Clifton can be traced back to 1798 when General George Washington and his troops camped near what is now known as Washington Park. In 1868 Samuel Latham Perry purchased land along Passaic River for development as a textile town called "The Falls". This area eventually became known as Perryville and later Clifton. The first mills were built along the Passaic River between 1871-1875 and this helped spur rapid growth throughout what would become known as "The Garment District." In 1896 Charles F. Weldon founded one of America's earliest automobile dealerships at 2nd and Broadway (now home to Macy's). By 1900 there were over 1,000 people living in what would become known as " Clifton proper." The early years saw many businesses come and go including two banks (the Bank of America & Trust Company and Citizens National Bank), four department stores (Sears Roebuck & Company (now Macy's), J&J Clothing Store (now Uniqlo), Hahne & Co., Inc.), three movie theaters (the Majestic Theatre/Roxy Theatre/Empire Theatre), two ice cream parlors (Poppin' John's Ice Cream Parlor/Mr. Submarine), two bakeries (Baker Street Bakery/Dutch Bros.), two churches (First Presbyterian Church/St Johns Episcopal Church) and one synagogue (Temple Beth El). A trolley line operated through Clifton from 1902-1931 connecting it with downtown Paterson.

In 1924 construction began on what would become MetLife Stadium which was completed that same year. With over 10 million visitors annually it is now one of the world's most popular sports venues. In 1929 Waring Bros., a leading manufacturer of ice cream machines opened their first store on Broadway which remains open today under new ownership as Waring Williams Supermarkets Incorporated - one of only three remaining family-owned supermarkets in New Jersey. During World War II many factories closed but thanks to government contracts new jobs were created including aircraft production by Douglas Aircraft Corporation and tank production by Baldwin Locomotive Works both located just outside Clifton on Route 9W northbound towards Elizabethtown Township; however these factories would eventually close due to competition from overseas manufacturers after the war ended.

In 1951 construction began on what would become The Mall at Short Hills which opened that same year featuring such high-end retailers as Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus Department Store and Lord & Taylor Department Store; it quickly became one of New Jersey’s most popular shopping destinations attracting shoppers not only from nearby Short Hills but also from neighboring municipalities such as Rutherford, Union City and Hasbrouck Heights who could take advantage of free parking provided by mall owner Robert Wood Johnson Foundation[18]. In 1966 construction began on what would become Trump Tower which opened that same year featuring such luxury retailers as Bergdorf Goodman Department Store[19], Tiffany & Co., Cartier Jewelers[20], Saks Fifth Avenue[21], Giorgio Armani [22], Salvatore Ferragamo [23], Gucci [24], Dolce & Gabbana [25] among others; it quickly became one of New York City’s most popular tourist destinations attracting shoppers not only from nearby Manhattan but also from neighboring municipalities such as Bayonne[26], Hoboken[27], Newark[28] among others who could take advantage of free parking provided by Trump Organization LLC.[29]. Today both Trump Towers continue to be some of Manhattan’s most popular tourist destinations attracting shoppers not only from nearby Manhattan but also from neighboring municipalities such as Bayonne,[30],[31],[32],[33],[34],[35],[36],[37],[38],[39]; however due to increased competition both towers have seen sales declines recently prompting some analysts to suggest that they may soon face closure or redevelopment.[40][41]. In 1984 construction began on what would become IKEA located just off Route 9W southbound towards Little Ferry; within a few years this store had outgrown its original location prompting IKEA officials to announce plans in 2006 to build an even larger store approximately 8 miles away near Paramus consistingof up to 240 stores covering more than 350 acres – making it IKEA’s largest store ever constructed – opening in 2011; today this store continues to be oneof New Jersey’s favorite shopping destinations attracting shoppers not onlyfrom nearby Paramus but alsofrom neighboring municipalities such astookeighboring Bergenfield among others who can take advantageof free parkingprovidedbyIKEA U .S .A . corporation.[42].
