Caldwell is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 9,898,[1] reflecting an increase of 1,527 (+24.2%) from the 7,711 counted in the 2000 Census.[4]

The borough was formed on April 10, 1894 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature from portions of Hanover Township and Mendham Township.[5] Caldwell is named for General James Caldwell (1784-1866), who served as Governor of North Carolina and U.S. Senator from Kentucky.[6][7][8]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough had a total area of 2.902 square miles (7.362 km2), including 2.898 square miles (7.309 km2) of land and 0.112 square mile (0.291 km2) of water (1.01%).[9]

The borough borders Mendham Township to the south and west; Hanover Township to the north; Montville to the east; and Chatham Borough to the southeast.[10][11][12] The Passaic River forms its eastern border with Chatham Borough.[13][14]
