Englewood is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 20,871, reflecting an increase of 1,521 (+10.4%) from the 19,711 counted in the 2000 Census.

Englewood was formed on March 3, 1894 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature from portions of Ridgefield Township and Tenafly Township. The borough derives its name from Englewood Cliffs (now part of Fort Lee), which were visible from its eastern border. The first settler in Englewood was John Witherspoon who arrived in 1869 and built a cabin on what is now known as Witherspoon Avenue. He named his property "Witherspoon's Woods". In 1870 he sold some land to Samuel Sabin who erected a store near where Witherspoon had settled and called it "Sabinville". A post office called Englewood was established on April 6, 1870 with Samuel Sabin as postmaster.

The area that would become Englewood experienced rapid growth starting in the late 1800s due to new transportation methods such as trains and automobiles which made it easier for people to move around. Many wealthy families moved into Englewood starting in 1905 because it was close to Manhattan but had more privacy than other areas such as Rutherford or Tenafly due to its hilly terrain. This led to many large mansions being built throughout the borough including ones on Summit Avenue (now home to Stony Brook University), Harding Road (now home to Saint Peter's University), and Lincoln Park (now home to Seton Hall University).

In 1923 a major fire destroyed much of downtown Englewood including most of the businesses that lined Main Street and caused an economic decline that lasted until World War II when soldiers returning from service bought homes and started businesses again. After World War II there were more suburbanization trends towards newer developments outside of town which led to a decrease in population until 1990 when there was another population boom due to new development such as The Shops at Liberty Corner which brought more people into downtown Englewood.

The economy has continued to grow since then with many new businesses opening up including restaurants like Pizzeria Bianco which has become one of the borough's iconic landmarks and retailers like Urban Outfitters which have helped revitalize parts of town that had been abandoned for years such as Lincoln Park which is now known for its trendy restaurants and bars along with its large park system.

Today there are many things happening in Englewood including hosting events for festivals like Bergenfest or concerts at venues like The Stone Pony Music Hall or Webster Hall which have helped make it one of the most popular places to live not only within Bergen County but also within New Jersey as a whole
