Overland Park is a city located in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 114,821. It is the sixth largest city in Kansas and the ninth largest city in the Midwest. The name Overland Park is derived from its location over a hill overlooking the confluence of two rivers.

The first settlers arrived in 1854 and established a small community on what is now known as Oak Hill Road. In 1872, Dr. J.C. Nichols developed Nichols Hills as a residential area for wealthy Kansas City residents who wanted to escape the noise and pollution of the city. The first houses were built on what are now called Nichols Hills Drive and Mulberry Street. In 1886, Dr. Nichols donated land for Overland Park's first school district which was named after him – Overland Park School District No 1 (OPSD1). OPD1 served as an elementary school until 1927 when it merged with Shawnee Mission School District No 1 to form Shawnee Mission- Overland Park School District (SM-OPSD).

In 1907, OPD1 constructed its first high school – Central High School (CHS). CHS served as OPD1's only high school until 1931 when it merged with Lenexa High School to form Lenexa Valley High School (LVHS). In 1952, LVHS became Overland Park Junior College (OPJC) which offered two-year degrees until 1978 when it became part of Washburn University – formerly Washburn Teachers College – where it still operates today under the name Washburn University– Lenexa Campus.

In 1917, Dr. J C Nichols subdivided his original donation into lots and sold them to families who began building homes on them that year.Nichols Hills Development Company website The community continued to grow slowly at first due to World War I but started to take off after World War II when veterans returned home and started families.
