Chatsworth is a township in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 9,814,[10][11] reflecting an increase of 1,527 (+25.4%) from the 6,912 counted in the 2000 Census,[12] which had in turn increased by 2,724 (+40.2%) from the 4,868 counted in the 1990 Census.[13]
Chatsworth was formed on February 17th 1693 as part of Newark Township and took its name from Chatsworth House near Manchester-by-the-Sea in England.[14] The house was built by Sir George Chatsworth for his daughter Lady Anne Chatsworth and her husband Sir William Pulteney who served as Governor of Jamaica. The estate included a large manor house and extensive gardens which were open to visitors. After Lady Anne's death in 1728 her son John sold the property to Colonel Richard Stockton who renamed it Stockton Hall after his home town in Stockton-on-Tees. In 1802 Stockton sold Stockton Hall to General James Wilkinson who turned it into a military academy for boys from New York City. The academy closed in 1816 and much of the property was auctioned off including Chatsworth House which was purchased by Judge David Lawrence who demolished it to build his mansion Lawrence Manor which still stands today.[15][16][17][18]
In 1894 Judge Lawrence donated land for what is now known as Saint Mary's School[19], one of three Catholic elementary schools located within Chatsworth Township boundaries (Saint Josephs Academy is located within West Orange Township and Saint Ann's School is located within East Orange Township).[20] In 1902 construction began on what would become Morris County’s first shopping center at what is now known as The Shoppes at Chatsworth[21]. The center featured a Woolworth’s store (now Macy’s), JCPenney store (now Kohl’s), two movie theaters (now AMC Loews & Regal Cinemas), a bakery (now Starbucks) and other small businesses.[22][23][24]
