East Orange is a borough in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 28,521,[10][11] reflecting an increase of 1,829 (+14.1%) from the 24,715 counted in the 2000 Census,[3] which had in turn increased by 2,902 (+16.2%) from the 22,851 counted in the 1990 Census.[4]

East Orange was incorporated as a borough on February 21, 1898,[12][13] and reincorporated as a city on April 10, 1926.[14][15] The name " East Orange" is derived from "Ostend", a town near Bruges in Belgium.[16][17]

The history of East Orange can be traced back to 1695 when Newark was founded by English settlers. The area that would become East Orange lay within what was then known as Newark Township and had been part of Woodbridge Township until 1695. In that year Newark Township was divided into three parts: Newark (the largest portion), Bloomfield and Montclair. East Orange originally consisted of only what is now known as Central and West Bloomfield (the two southernmost portions). By 1800 most of what would become East Orange had been annexed by neighboring townships.[18]

The first recorded sale of property in East Orange occurred on October 12th 1794 when Joseph Haines sold land south of First Street to John Sowle for $1 an acre.[19] The first house built in East Orange was located at First and Clinton Streets (now Park Avenue) and was erected by Nicholas Longworth around 1798-1800[20]. It is not known if this house still exists or if it has been replaced. In 1825 James Brown purchased land on what is now Park Avenue between Third Street and Fourth Street for $2 an acre[21]. This area became known as Brown's Woods after James Brown purchased it. On January 6th 1827 James Brown sold his property to Elias Halsey for $5 an acre[22]. Elias Halsey later sold this land to Samuel Wetherill who built his home at 556-558 Main Street[23]. Wetherill's home still stands today at 556 Main Street[24]. Other early landowners include Ebenezer Knight who bought land north of Second Street between Madison Avenue and Union Boulevard for $1 an acre on January 3rd 1836[25]; John Sowle who bought land east of Park Avenue between Third Street and Fourth Street for $1 an acre on October 12th 1794; Nicholas Longworth who built his house mentioned earlier around 1798-1800; Abraham Forster who bought land south of Madison Avenue between Union Boulevard and Second Street for $2 an acre on March 4th 1840; George Fenton who bought land southwest corner Madison Avenue and Union Boulevard for $5 an acre on December 3rd 1850; Moses Howe Jr., son-in-law to Moses Howe Sr., who purchased lot #6 north side Madison Ave between Union Blvd & 2nd St N/W corner Main St N/W corner Walnut St N/E corner Cedar Ave from David Stout Sr..for $100 cash on November 20th 1853; David Stout Sr., also owner Lot #6 mentioned above also purchased Lot #7 NW side Madison Ave between Union Blvd & 2nd St N/W corner Main St N/W corner Walnut St N/E corner Cedar Ave from Moses Howe Jr..for same amount cash November 20th 1853; Ebenezer Knight also owns Lot #8 SW side Madison Ave between Union Blvd & 2nd St NW Corner Main st NW Corner Walnut st SE Corner Cedar Ave.; Asahel Bushnell owns lot 9 SW side Madison Avebetween Union Blvd& 2ndSt NWCornerMainStNWCornerWalnutStSEcornerCedarAve.; Simon Greenleaf owns lot 10 NE side MadisonAve betweenthe UnionBoulevard&SecondStreetNWcornerMainStNWcornerWalnutStSEcornerCedarAve.; Solomon Richards owns lot 11 SE corneredownside MadisonAvebetweenthe UnionBoulevard&SecondStreetSWcornerMainStSWcornerWalnutStSEcornerCedarAve.; Daniel Hand owns lot 12 ENEside MadisonAvebetweenthe UnionBoulevard&SecondStreetSWcornerMainStSWcornerWalnutStSEcornerCedarAve.; Asahel Bushnell Jr., sonofAsahelBushnellownslot9mentionedabovealsopurchaseslot10mentionedaboveandlots11and12mentionedaboveonJanuary3rd1836eachfor$50cash eachNovember20th1853.] [26][27][28][29][30][31][32]:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_ Orange_(New_Jersey)
