Canton, TX

Canton is a city located in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 21,898 at the 2010 census. Canton is part of the Austin– Round Rock metropolitan area.

The city of Canton was founded in 1881 by Jesse H. Jones and James A. Canton as a railroad town on the Southern Pacific Railroad line. The town's name is derived from the Mandarin word for "village" or "town". The first post office opened in 1881 with James A. Canton as postmaster. By 1886, there were over 1,000 residents in Canton and it had become an important railroad junction and trading center for agricultural products and livestock. In 1888, Jesse H. Jones donated land to build a Methodist church which still stands today as one of the oldest churches in Williamson County.

In 1902, Canton became home to Texas Technological College (now known as Texas Tech University). During World War II, the Army Air Forces established an airfield just south of town which served as a training base for pilots flying missions over Japan during World War II; it was later closed after the war ended and turned into Camp Mabry (now part of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport). In 1951, Interstate 35 was constructed through central Williamson County connecting Dallas with San Antonio; this greatly increased traffic through Canton which continued to grow rapidly thanks to its location near major highways and its proximity to Austin and Round Rock. In 1957, construction began on what would become Williamson County Hospital; this facility opened in 1959 and has since been renamed UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas/ Fort Worth Campus (formerly Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas/ Fort Worth Campus).

Today, much of downtown Canton has been restored to its original 1880s appearance including many historic buildings that have been converted into apartments or businesses; this includes the former Masonic Temple building which now houses several restaurants including Antone's Steakhouse & Saloon (opened in 1978), Joe's Crab Shack (opened in 2000), ZZ's Pizza (opened in 2003), La Barbecue (opened in 2006), Pecan Lodge BBQ & Brewpub (opened in 2007) and Cattle Baron BBQ & Brewpub (opened in 2009). Other notable businesses located downtown include Bank Of America®, AT&T Mobility® Business Solutions™ - Central Texas Region Headquarters (), Wells Fargo Bank®, Fifth Third Bank (), American Express®, FedEx Office® - Central Texas (), JCPenney®, Kohl's Department Store (), Macy's Department Store () . Additionally , several large shopping centers have been built nearby including The Shops At Willow Bend () [formerly Willow Bend Marketplace], Towneplace Suites by Marriott® - Round Rock North (), West Oaks Mall () [formerly West Oaks Mall North], HEB Grocery Stores Incorporated - Cedar Park (#1015 Cedar Park Blvd., #1020 Cedar Park Blvd.), Walmart Supercenter (#1101 Wickersham Lane) [formerly Walmart Supercenter] (). Additionally , numerous smaller shops can be found throughout downtown including Starbucks Coffee Company (#1002 Wickersham Lane), Subway Restaurants Incorporated (#901 Wickersham Lane), Panera Bread Company (#1007 Wickersham Lane) [originally Panera Bread Roastery], Chipotle Mexican Grill Incorporated (#1004 Wickersham Lane) [originally Chipotle Mexican Grill]. There are also several parks located within or near downtown including Travis Park (), City Hall Park (), Heritage Square Park (). Additionally , Lake Travis is located just east of town off I-35 near Seguin ().

Real estate prices vary widely throughout Canton depending on location; some neighborhoods such as Downtown Historic District have seen prices increase dramatically due to their historical significance while other areas such as Northwest Hills have seen prices decrease due to their distance from major highways or lack of amenities such as restaurants or stores . Overall however , real estate prices continue to rise steadily throughout most parts of town making it an increasingly popular place to live both historically and currently .
