Forsan is a small town located in the northwestern corner of Harrison County, Texas. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Forsan is best known as the home of the Forsan Independent School District and for its annual rodeo.
The town was founded in 1892 by J.D. Forsan and his brother-in-law, A.C. Henson, on land that had been donated to them by Waco cattleman John Boles. The town's name is derived from the nearby Forsan Creek, which in turn was named for an early settler on the creek's banks named John Forsythe.
In 1906, a post office opened in Forsan with J D Forsan as postmaster; it remained open until 1957 when it was replaced by a branch of the Harrison County Bank & Trust Company (now part of First National Bank). In 1916, a school district was established in Forsan with A C Henson as superintendent; this district remains operational to this day (albeit with a different name - the Forsan Independent School District).
During World War II, much of northwest Texas was placed under military occupation due to its strategic location near Fort Hood and other military installations; this included Forsan which became home to several military bases and training facilities including Camp Hood Air Force Base (later renamed Killeen Air Force Base), Camp Bullis (later renamed Fort Bliss), and Naval Training Center Corpus Christi (now known as Naval Station Corpus Christi).
Today, most of these facilities have been closed or converted into other uses; however Killeen Air Force Base remains open and active while Fort Bliss has been turned over to civilian authorities and is now known as Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland/Kelly Field Military Community Transition Command - West (JBSA-LACKLAND). Naval Station Corpus Christi continues to serve as headquarters for United States Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) and provides support services for naval units stationed throughout Central America and South America.
