The history of real estate in Westwood dates back to the early 1900s when land was first developed as a residential area. In 1924, the first subdivision of Westwood was created and named "The Highlands." The Highlands consisted of large lots with sweeping views of Los Angeles to the south and Beverly Hills to the north. In 1928, development began on what would become known as "The Village," which consisted of smaller lots situated between The Highlands and Wilshire Boulevard.

In 1949, development began on what would become known as "The Promenade." The Promenade consisted of high-end single-family homes that were built on large tracts of land that stretched from La Cienega Boulevard to Santa Monica Boulevard. Development continued along Santa Monica Boulevard until it reached Fairfax Avenue in 1965. At this point, development shifted eastward along Fairfax Avenue until it reached La Brea Avenue in 1975.

In 1981, development began on what would become known as "The Canyon." The Canyon consisted of high-end single-family homes that were built on large tracts of land that stretched from Sepulveda Boulevard to Ventura Boulevard. Development continued along Ventura Boulevard until it reached Laurel Canyon Road in 1992.

In 1994, development began on what would become known as " Westwood Village." Westwood Village consisted of high-end single-family homes that were built on large tracts of land that stretched from Wilshire Boulevard to San Vicente Blvd.. Development continued along San Vicente Blvd until it reached Moorpark Street in 2003.

Since 1994, there has been an increase in luxury condominiums and townhomes being developed within the city limits of Westwood; however, much more affordable housing has also been constructed throughout the city over time by various non-profit organizations and developers who are looking to provide quality housing options for those who cannot afford a home within the exclusive confines of Westwood Village or Canyon estates .
