Leavenworth, KS

Leavenworth is a city in Leavenworth County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 9,521. It is located about halfway between Topeka and Wichita on U.S. Route 281 and about 25 miles south of Lawrence.

The city was founded in 1868 as a railroad town and named for General James Leavenworth, who had commanded the American forces during the Mexican-American War. The first post office opened in 1869. The city's economy has been based on agriculture (especially wheat) and tourism since its early days; today it is also a center for retail sales and services.
