Garfield is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 9,827,[10][11] reflecting an increase of 514 (+5.4%) from the 8,912 counted in the 2000 Census,[12] which had in turn increased by 1,715 (+16.3%) from the 6,898 counted in the 1990 Census.[13]
Garfield was incorporated as a borough on February 21, 1898,[14] from portions of Hackensack Township.[15][16][17] The borough derives its name from James Garfield (1831-1881), 20th President of the United States.[18][19][20]
The borough is located in northeastern Bergen County and is bordered by Hackensack to the east and south; Union City to the west; and Ridgefield Park to the north. Interstate 80 runs through Garfield connecting it with Newark and New York City to its south and west, while U.S. Route 46 passes through town as Main Street leading north to Paramus and Hackensack via Closter on its eastern border with Union City before turning into River Road heading northwest towards Teaneck. The Passaic River forms part of Garfield's eastern border with Ridgefield Park before emptying into Newark Bay at Port Elizabeth just south of I-80 Exit 10A near Harrison Avenue.[21][22]
According to Forbes magazine's 2018 list of America's Best Places To Live,[23] Garfield ranks #2 behind only nearby Saddle Brook Township which ranked #1 on that list for 2018.[24] In 2013 Money Magazine named Garfield one of "The Best Places To Raise Kids".[25][26][27] According to NeighborhoodScout analysis conducted May 1-5, 2016[28], this neighborhood has a high quality of life with excellent schools and low crime rates.
