Uniondale, NY

Uniondale is a suburban town located in Nassau County, New York. The population was 108,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York metropolitan area. Uniondale is known for its lakeside location and its many shopping and dining options.

The town was first settled in the early 1800s by farmers from Connecticut who were looking for new land to farm. In 1875, the railroad came to Uniondale and it began to grow rapidly as a commuter town for workers in Manhattan. In 1916, Uniondale became a self-governing village and in 1922 it became a town.

Today, Uniondale is home to many families who enjoy living in a safe community with plenty of things to do. The town has several parks including Lake Success Park which offers fishing, boating, swimming and tennis; Lakeside Park which has a playground, basketball courts and baseball fields; Rosebank Park which features an ice rink; and North Shore Park which has a pool, playgrounds and tennis courts. There are also several shopping districts including Lake Success Village which includes stores such as Macy's, Bloomingdales and JCPenney; Sunrise Highway which includes stores like Sears Roebuck & Co., Kmart and Target; Town Center which includes stores like Bed Bath & Beyond, Home Depot and Lowe's; East Meadow Shopping Center which includes stores like Barnes & Noble Booksellers Inc., DSW Shoe Warehouse Inc., Rite Aid Corporation Pharmacy Plus store (the only one of its kind on Long Island)and Tops Markets supermarkets.; South Shore Plaza Shopping Centerwhich includes stores like Best Buy Co., OfficeMax Incorporated (formerly Office Depot), PetSmart Superstores (two)and Toys "R" Us.; Westbury Plaza Shopping Centerwhich includes stores like Apple Store (one), Bed Bath & Beyond (two), Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurants(three), Dunkin' Donuts restaurants(four), Foot Locker locations(five)and GameStop locations(six). It should be noted that there are currently no major retail developments planned for Uniondale in the near future due to zoning restrictions that prohibit large-scale commercial development within certain areas of the town limits. However there are plans underway by developers to build residential complexes consisting of high-rise apartments along Sunrise Highway as well as other areas within the town limits.

Unionlake is served by two bus routes operated by Nassau Inter County Express: Route S1 runs between Mineola via Syosset along Sunrise Hwy./Lake Success Blvd./ Westbury Rd./South Shore Pkwy./Erie Blvd./ New Hyde Park Rd.; while Route S2 runs between Lynbrook via Hicksville along Jericho Turnpike/Long Island Expressway/"Interstate 495". Additionally there is free public transportation available through MTA Bus Timeoperated by MetroCard.
