Denville is a township in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 10,527,[8][9] reflecting an increase of 1,814 (+31.4%) from the 7,711 counted in the 2000 Census,[10] which had in turn increased by 2,564 (+41.1%) from the 5,584 counted in the 1990 Census.[11]
Denville Township was formed on March 3rd 1798 from portions of Morristown Township and Mount Olive Township.[12][13] The township was named for General James Denison (1737-1820), a hero of the American Revolution who served as a brigadier general and later as governor of New York.[14][15]
The town center is located at milepost 0.0 on Route 9 north of Interstate 80 and south of Route 17. It is bordered to the east by Morristown Township and to the west by Mount Olive Township. The boroughs of Morris Plains and Parsippany-Troy Hills are adjacent to Denville to its south and west respectively; while Rutherford and Woodbridge are both adjacent to Denville to its north.
According to Forbes magazine's 2018 list of America's Best Places To Live,[16] Denville ranks #3 on their list behind only Summit County's Park City Utah (#1) and Burlington County's Mount Holly Ville (#2). In 2017 Money Magazine also ranked Denville as one of America’s Best Places To Live[17], citing low crime rates (ranked #6 out of 277 towns surveyed), strong economy with median household income over $100K[18], excellent schools (ranked #2 out of 21 towns surveyed)[19], affordable housing[20], proximity to major cities like New York City (just over an hour away) but without their high cost[21], great recreational opportunities including skiing at nearby ski resorts like Whiteface Mountain Resort or hiking at nearby parks like Ramapo Valley State Park or Saddle River State Park or biking along miles upon miles of bike paths that crisscross through town.[22].
