Dearborn Heights is a city located in Wayne County, Michigan. The population was 97,912 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The city has been designated a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation since 1988.
The history of Dearborn Heights can be traced back to 1805 when General Henry Dearborn and his troops camped on the site that would become Dearborn Heights. In 1825, land was surveyed for settlement and a plat was filed with the Wayne County Court House in 1827. The first settler arrived in 1830 and named his settlement after General Dearborn. The town grew slowly at first, but began to take off after the completion of the Michigan Central Railroad in 1853. By 1870, Dearborn Heights had a population of 1,500 and by 1900 it had reached 10,000 residents.
Today, Dearborn Heights is home to many businesses and organizations including Ford Motor Company Headquarters (formerly known as Highland Park), DTE Energy Company (formerly known as Consumers Power), American Axle & Manufacturing (formerly known as BorgWarner), Compuware Corporation (formerly known as Computer Sciences Corporation), and Quicken Loans Incorporated (the largest online mortgage lender in America). Additionally, there are numerous churches throughout the city including First Baptist Church of Dearborn Heights which was founded in 1865; Trinity United Methodist Church which was founded in 1886; Sts Peter & Paul Catholic Church which was founded in 1896; Bethany Lutheran Church which was founded in 1903; Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church which was founded in 1907; Holy Redeemer Catholic Parish which opened its doors on September 5th 1912; Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church which opened its doors on October 2nd 1913; Islamic Center- Michigan whose first mosque opened its doors on December 8th 1979; and Temple Israel whose first synagogue opened its doors on October 15th 1928.
Dearborn Heights also has an extensive public school system that includes five high schools: Oakwood University High School (which serves students from grades 9-12); John Glenn High School (grades 7-12); Harper Woods High School (grades 9-12); Lincoln Park High School (grades 7-12); and Theodore Roosevelt High School for Science & Technology(grades 9-12). Additionally, there are four middle schools: Beaumont Middle School(grades 6-8); Brookside Middle School(grades 6-8); Franklin Middle School(grades 6-8); and Washington Middle/High school(combined grades 6 through 12).
