Cloverdale is a small town located in the eastern part of Contra Costa County, California. The population was 10,898 at the 2010 census. Cloverdale is located at 37°5′24″N 122°1′41″W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.3 square miles (6.9 km2), all of it land.

The town was founded in 1868 by Jotham Sibley and named for his wife's family estate in Scotland. The first post office opened in 1869 and closed in 1942; mail now goes through Martinez. The railroad reached Cloverdale in 1872 and helped spur growth; today there are still several active rail lines running through the town, including Amtrak's Capitol Corridor line which runs through Cloverdale Station on Main Street near downtown Cloverdale.

Today, Cloverdale is a suburban community with many well-maintained homes and tree-lined streets.
